Feeling Racy in Austin, Texas

Lewis Hamilton
Rudy’s BBQ

Last weekend we made our yearly pilgrimage to Austin, Texas to attend United States Grand Prix F1 race. Representing both the US and the UK, rooting for my favorite driver Lewis Hamilton. Lewis won, of course!  I LOVE Austin. I LOVE Formula 1 auto racing. I LOVE BBQ.

My first love in Austin is Lake Travis. Lake Travis is where my family goes to relax, unwind and experience “lake life”.Long lazy mornings on the houseboat, floating in a cove followed by an adrenaline rush of an afternoon on jet-skis. Since we do not live in Austin, we simply head to the Lakeway Marina and rent what we need for the day. The very best time to be on the lake is at sunset.

Once off the lake we head to dinner nearby at Steiner Ranch for Texas sized steaks, or to Rudy’s BBQ located in a gas station on Route 620, or to Lucy’s on Route 620 for fried chicken. If we are feeling like a night out we go downtown for drinks and a game of corn hole at Lucille on Rainey Street.

On this occasion we were in town strictly for the racing.  Three glorious days at the track, Circuit of the Americas (COTA).  Circuit of the Americas is a perfect mix of Texas hospitality combined with sophisticated racing facilities.  The racing weekend kicks off Friday with practice sessions, followed by qualifying on Saturday and the big race on Sunday.  With the track open all day, there are plenty of activities to fill in the time in between sessions of racing.  COTA throws a heck of a party, and the venue is filled with BBQ, food trucks, music, rock wall and more.  New additions this year included a track side salon where I got my nails painted in F1 theme (woo hoo!) and a full size, go-fast Go Karting track (double woo hoo!).  Justin Timberlake and Stevie Wonder headlined concerts on Saturday and Sunday night.  A weekend jam-packed full of fun and racing in one of my favorite locales.  Woo triple hoo!

Austin is great for outdoor activities, food, down-home hospitality and of course the music scene.  I think it is the people in Austin that truly make it a stand out destination.  Already planning out next trip!
